Hello!
My name is Amanda McVey. I am very slowly working towards
completing my Business Administration AS-T Degree. My major has taken many
twists and turns. I began with the intention of working in Child Psychology. When
that got more intense and emotional than I had anticipated, I changed direction
and I went into Administration of Justice. I took about a 10-year break from school while
I started my family and found a completely unrelated career in which I can grow
both personally and professionally.
I am currently the Deputy City Clerk for the City of Pittsburg
where I work full time and then some by attending evening meetings at least
once a week. My goal is to work my way to the Director of Records and
Council Services *enter the need to complete my degree* and potentially run as
the elected City Clerk. I will admit, prior to joining the City
Clerk’s Department, I had never even heard of a City Clerk—much less knew what
a City Clerk did. Let me tell you, it’s a LOT more than you can imagine!
Out of all of the available English courses I could have
selected, I chose California Literature because my career could
potentially place me anywhere in the state of California and this is a fun way
to learn a little more of the state's dynamic while also improving my horrible
writing skills. English, writing specifically, has always been a struggle for
me and so my hope is that by combining English with a
subject that I also need to learn and explore will make it a little easier.
I have two children, Avary (5) and Jace (4), who keep me busy -
even when I'm sleeping! I came from a large family, I am one of eight siblings,
and I never imagined parenthood to look quite the way it does! Work, school,
and family life is a difficult balance, but I am determined to complete my
degree this year so will have to figure it all out!
P.S. My daughter is a first-year Girl Scout Daisy so if anyone
wants some cookies... :)
Hi, Amanda!! Woow your introduction made me feel so proud of you even though we don't know each other! You're amazing! It may be hard coming back to school after 10-years, having to work a full-time job and having two kids, but you are still here pursuing your business degree! That's really awesome.
ReplyDeleteI also find interesting your reason to have chosen this class. You chose Eng-205 to combine two things and make everything convenient. I wish I had focus like you. I chose this class just because it worked in my schedule haha.
Take care! I hope we'll get along during this semester
Hi Amanda! Welcome back to school. It is great that you decided to return to school, especially with having two young kids. It must be difficult. I understand the struggle of balancing school and other responsibilities. I also have taken breaks from school. It is tough. I not only struggle with English classes but with other classes, so I understand you. Good luck to both of us this semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda! Congratulations on going back to school and continuing to work toward your educational goals. It's sounds like you are very busy between work, school and being a parent. Girl Scouts alone is a full time commitment! My daughter was a Girl Scout for 6 years so I know the struggles of all those cookie sales! I also work full time as a General Manager, am taking classes after a long hiatus and am raising my daughter. Cheers to you and your continued success through dedication and hard work!
ReplyDeleteHello Amanda! That's so great that you made the decision to go back to school. I was originally trying for a that same degree but my passions took me to a different place. I really hope your degree works out and good luck on the transfer process.
ReplyDeleteHello, Amanda!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your services to the City of Pittsburg. Words cannot express how much I appreciate your resilience. It's tough being a mother of young children, a deputy clerk who has a demanding work, and a student. I had one class about child development and I gave up trying to figure kids' minds out. You're an inspiration to the people around you, keep doing you! Best of luck!

Hi Amanda! I really enjoyed reading your introduction. I can relate to a lot of things you are going through. This is my first semester back to school after a 11 year break, I work full time for Contra Costa County and have two children as well. I was very nervous to return to school and had a lot of self doubt, however I am happy to say, it feels so good and I have a different drive than I did before. I wish you the best of luck in completing your degree and and reaching the goals you have.
